Donate, Buy, Volunteer, Help Community Youth Groups Experience the Joy of Serving and Raise Money
We have a vision – provide an opportunity for our youth to experience the joy of serving and an additional way for local teams and organizations to do team building, increase parent involvement and raise awareness and money for their favorite organization. The vision is a large community event where everyone is working for each other with the grassroots initiative resulting in the service and benefit of thousands within our community. Helping people in our local community while working in fellowship with our neighbors is the goal. The team building, awareness, involvement and fundraising will happen naturally when we all serve together.
Team or Organization Participation –
It is well known that people experience a deep sense of joy through serving. The key is to make service easy and not burdensome. That is done through dividing up the work load to make it light for all and powerful when done together as one. Teachers and Coaches can use this as a great teaching moment to share how life is bigger than themselves. To demonstrate how serving in a community is much like working together to accomplish a common goal on a team, or in a group, and that when we live for each other we all benefit. The U.S. Teacher of the Year, Jahana Hayes, gives great praise to a ‘service learning curriculum.’ The teaching moments and comradery experienced through events such as this are priceless.
Who Benefits –
We feel that this initiative will have greater meaning to those who participate if the groups select an outside charity to support. For example, the high school track team volunteers time to support both the community at large and then chooses the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry as their charity of choice. All proceeds will be split between volunteer organizations.

A fun story of community, service and recycling
The Community Rummage Sale in Glen Ellyn followed a successful Spring 2023 event with a repeat event in the Fall and it was another great success. You may have seen the signs around town this fall. It’s the brainchild of First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn, which sits at the corner of Duane and Forest.
The Rummage Sale tagline is “bringing the community together to serve the community,” and that is exactly what they did, the rummage sale is run by volunteers. This fall, there were four groups that helped run the sale: Boy Scout Troop 45, the Glenbard West Choir, the Glenbard West Theatre, and the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn. Between the four, they had over 70 volunteers–approximately 50 youth and 20 adults. The sale brought in a profit of $4,000, which was split between the four organizations.
In addition to the groups that volunteered, several other charities were represented at the sale. The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry had a table set up to create awareness and collect donations and will also be receiving a donation from the Glenbard West Theatre. Feed My Starving Children received a donation of both volunteer time and money from the Glenbard West Choir. Treasure House and the Epilepsy Foundation received donations as well in the form of items to resell or donate.
The vision for the rummage sale is simple–to provide an opportunity for youth in our community to experience the joy of serving while also providing an opportunity for team building, parent involvement, and fundraising for local organizations. The sale is a community event where everyone is working with each other and for each other; it’s an event that benefits the people in our community and encourages working in fellowship with neighbors.
People experience joy through serving. It’s important to find ways of serving that feel good–service should be easy, not burdensome. Service becomes easier when there are so many people that the workload becomes light.
